Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is one of the most common — and most under-investigated — hormone conditions I see. Irregular or missing periods, breakouts along the jawline, hair thinning or unwanted hair growth, weight that won’t budge, trouble conceiving: these are signs worth taking seriously, not just managing with birth control and being sent on your way.
What’s driving it?
- Blood sugar and insulin — insulin resistance is a major driver for many women with PCOS, even those who aren’t overweight.
- Androgen excess — higher-than-ideal male-type hormones behind the acne, hair changes, and irregular ovulation.
- Inflammation and stress — which can disrupt ovulation and make everything louder.
- Thyroid overlap — thyroid issues can mimic or worsen PCOS symptoms, so I always check.
How I work
We investigate properly. Full symptom history, cycle history, and lab review. If you’ve been told “your labs are normal” but you still feel off, we’ll look closer.
We address the drivers. Blood-sugar-friendly nutrition is usually the cornerstone — not a diet, a way of eating you can actually live with. Targeted supplements, cycle support, stress and sleep foundations, and movement that works with your body.
We track what matters. Regular cycles, clearer skin, steadier energy, healthy weight — real markers, not just lab numbers.
You deserve answers, not dismissal
If you’ve been told your symptoms are “just how it is,” I’d like a second look. I’m Dr. Tara Clapp, a naturopathic doctor in St. Catharines focused on women’s hormones.
